Abstract
The seroprevalence of antibodies to human T-cell lymphotropic virus, type 1(HTLV-1) was evaluated by enzyme immunoassay(EIA) and indirect immunofluorescent assay(IFA) in patients with hemopilia, leukemia and other hematologic disorders, cancers,
chronic renal failure with hemodialysis and healthy blood donors in Pusan and Kyongnam area. Among the 1,037 cases tested, two were found to be seropositive for antibody to HTLV-1 by both EIA and IFA tests, resulting in the prevalence of 0.19%.
The
prevalence is comparable to a previous report of 0.25% in Korea. Two patients of chronic renal failure with hemodialysis showed evidence of HTLV-1 seropositivity without other illnesses attributable to HTLV-1 infection or risk factors for HTLV-1
infection other than transfusion. Seroprevalence of anti-HTLV-1 in Pusan and Kyongnam district, adjacent to Kyushu area of Japan known ot be and endemic area of HTLV-1 infection, is not high and this finding again confirms that Korea is not an
endemic
area of HTLV-1 infection. But seropositive cases have been found in two patients with multiple transfusion history in this study, and preventive measures should be undertaken for transmission of HTLV-1 through transfusion of blood products.
